Napoleon lll, French Inkwell Desk Set, Boulle Inlay, Tortoise Shell, France, 19th century
A superb and increasingly rare antique Napoleon III period Boulle inlay inkstand, exemplifying the opulence and craftsmanship of mid-19th century French decorative arts. This exceptional desk accessory set features intricate brass inlay in the traditional Boulle technique, set against a rich contrasting ground.
The piece is fitted with two original glass inkwells, each retaining its finely cast gilt bronze (doré bronze) hinged lid. The inkwells are housed within a beautifully detailed compartment, framed by elaborate brass inlay and accented with finely chased gilt bronze mounts.
A single drawer is seamlessly integrated into the front, offering discreet storage for writing implements or seals. The inkstand is further enhanced by a central carry handle and rests on four elegant gilt bronze claw feet, adding both presence and refinement.
Original, complete sets of this nature are becoming increasingly difficult to source, particularly with both inkwells intact and in such well-preserved condition. This piece would make a distinguished addition to any desk, study, or collection, and an exceptional gift for collectors of fine antique objects.
