A mid-19th-century Continental European genre painting, c. 1840–1860, depicting two children engaged in a lesson. The highly finished faces, sentimental subject, dark interior, and careful treatment of clothing and objects fit the academic/genre tradition popular in Germany, Austria, France, and neighboring regions during this period.
