Axel Einar Hjorth, Nordiska Kompaniet, Swedish Mid-Century Modern, Rare "Birka" Chairs, Honey Shearling, Birch, Sweden, 1930s
A rare pair of “Birka” dining or side chairs designed by Axel Einar Hjorth (Sweden, 1888–1959) for Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1930s. Axel Einar Hjorth served as the lead designer for Sweden’s Nordiska Kompaniet department store from 1926 to 1938. Each example features clean lines and curved backrests typical of Hjorth’s restrained modernist approach. The drop seats have been newly reupholstered in a gorgeous curly genuine shearling. A significant example of Hjorth’s refined yet utilitarian aesthetic, produced during his influential tenure as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet. Our gallery has the matching "Birka" model sideboard (with its original NK label) available as well as a set of 6 "Birka" chairs; please inquire for more information regarding this case piece or complete dining chair set. Repairable veneer damage present on the curved backrests of each example. Wood presents with scratches and patina throughout.
