Axel Einar Hjorth, Nordiska Kompaniet, Swedish Mid-Century Modern, Root Wood, Rare "Birka" Sideboard, Sweden, 1937
A rare example of the “Birka” model sideboard, designed by renowned Swedish architect Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) for Nordiska Kompaniet in 1937. Crafted in richly figured root wood veneer, the piece features three doors, with two right-hand compartments offering adjustable shelving and a left-hand section housing three pull-out drawers. This sideboard exemplifies Hjorth’s signature blend of modernist design with natural materials, created during his influential tenure as head designer at NK. The work includes the original Nordiska Kompaniet manufacturer's label inside, along with a verso label marked: MADE IN SWEDEN / R 38870 - C 9 10 37.
Matching set of six “Birka” model dining chairs available separately.
Root Wood, Brass; Sweden c. 1930s
Provenance: Acquired in 1937 at the Nordiska Kompaniet store in Stockholm by Ingerd and Bernhard Badt. The couple emigrated to the United States in the spring of 1938, bringing the set with them after being advised, “you cannot buy furniture like this in the United States.” The pieces have remained in the family ever since and are now consigned by their daughter.
